VCAN Scholarship Requirements: The Virginia College Affordability Network (VCAN) is a scholarship program that grants local students financial aid support for their education. Interested persons are hereby invited to submit applications for the VCAN Scholarship. Students who wish to be selected for this program must meet certain requirements, which have been discussed in full as you read on.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be Pell Grant eligible. VCAN comes as an additional financial aid to help you fund your education.

Program Description

The Virginia College Affordability Network (VCAN) Scholarship Program is an initiative to grant local students access to college. The scholarship is specifically for students who have limited financial resources to receive a quality education. The VCAN scholarship to be hosted by NSU is dedicated to building and maintaining the mission of the National College Access Network, which is:

  • To buildcommunities
  • Strengthencommunities  and
  • To empower these communities

So they can have access to college. The program is open to underrepresented groups in post-secondary education.

Who is eligible for the VCAN Scholarship?

The VCAN scholarship is providing support to up to 500 VSU scholars who are within the Tri-Cities and Greater Richmond-Petersburg regions, and up to 275 newly recruited candidates are awarded financial aid support on an annual basis. All you need to do is maintain a cumulative GPA of not less than 2.5 and some other eligibility levels to maintain your scholarship, and the funding will keep on renewing until you get to your senior level. Scholars who got below the GPA requirements will be sent a one-semester warning status, and the warning is to get yourself back on track to avoid losing it.

VCAN Scholarship Requirements

All candidates who wish to be considered for VCAN financial aid must meet the following requirements:

  1. Candidates must register using the NSU Online Application, and to be considered, they must meet the admission requirements for the specific programs.
  2. You must be admitted as a first-year student; that is to say, you have to meet the university admissions requirements.
  3. You must be eligible and qualified for the Pell Grant based on FAFSA information.
  4. You must have a FAFSA that is filed with NSU.
  5. You must be living in an area that is 45 miles from the university.
  6. You will learn more about the requirements when you are shortlisted. The scholarship organizers will get back to you via the personal information provided on the application.

Other Requirements for VCAN Scholarships

1: CSET Scholarship Requirement

The CSET Scholarship at NSU (College of Science, Engineering, and Technology) will provide a scholarship award that is worth up to $4,000 annually. To be eligible:

  • A student must score not less than 2.8 GPA.
  • The candidate must be enrolled in any of the nine science and technology departments.

2: Requirements for Research Stipend to be Provided by WBHR-LSAMP

For the research stipend, selected candidates get up to $3,120 annually. They also receive access to research internship opportunities as well as a one-on-one mentoring course with a faculty mentor.

To be eligible, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Maintain a GPA of not less than 2.8.
  • You must be enrolled as a second-semester freshman in any of these courses: chemistry, biology, engineering, technology, computer science, or mathematics.

3: The Office of Civil Rights Scholarship (OCR) Requirements

OCR provides tuition and/or books for undergraduate candidates; tuition costs and stipends are covered for their graduate counterparts.

Here are the requirements to apply:

  • You must be enrolled as a full-time student in the engineering field (either electronics or optics).
  • A GPA of 3.0 and above is preferred, but the minimum GPA requirement for undergraduate students is 2.8.
  • A GPA of 3.0 or higher is expected for graduate applicants.
